Louis Sullivan—early pioneer of modernism, progenitor of the skyscraper, and architect of the maxim “form follows function”—died penniless in spring 1924 in a hotel in Chicago, where he spent his final years in the grips of alcoholism and isolation. Sullivan had moved to the city from Massachusetts during the building boom that followed the Great Chicago Fire in 1871 looking to make a name for himself. Together with collaborator Dankmar Adler, at first he did—achieving success in the Windy City and beyond with such works as the Chicago Stock Exchange Building (1894) and the Prudential Building (1896) in Buffalo, New York. After the Panic of 1893, the pair separated due to creative and financial differences, and Sullivan struggled to secure work. He often called on his friends—including mentee Frank Lloyd Wright, who referred to Sullivan as “lieber Meister” [beloved master]—for money. However, in the early 1900s, he was hired to design several small Midwestern banks. Despite their size, he approached them with the same degree of pragmatism and attention to detail as his earlier, larger commissions. Fellow architect A.N. Rebori wrote an extensive essay for RECORD about these so-called “jewel box” structures (at the time, in May 1916, just six of eight had been built), which he described as an “architecture replete with meaning” and inspiring “high and far-reaching hope.” Sullivan’s project in Newark, Ohio, which Rebori lauds with gusto, was also recently restored and converted into a visitors center by Rogers Krajnak Architects, Inc..![]()
